Tragically, Bush Chooks were nearly wiped out in Darwin due to an anti-termite killer—Mirex, an organochloride—that was lethal to birds such as Bush Chooks (oh, and humans as well). Since it was banned 20 odd years ago, Bush Chooks have gradually come back to our back yards—with their distinctive calls, clumsy flying, and systematic patrolling of our gardens—looking for termites.
