I cucuzzeddi di friiri (Zucchini) print - 2022 edition

2022 limited edition print from the 2016 Wealth of the Land exhibition.

Created from the streets of La Vucciria market in Palermo 2014-2016, these prints celebrate the fruit and vegetables of the streets. The markets, established by Arabs more than 1200 years ago sell seasonal, mostly regionally grown in Sicily.

Each of the images in the show were hand drawn digital images, based on a series of photographs taken from different angles and light sources. They each took from 40-60 hours to make.

The work in Wealth of the Land was exhibited in Palermo, Darwin, Melbourne and Sydney

Zucchini
Another distant arrival from south America, the zucchini is from the cucurbita family, and includes what in English we also call squash and pumpkins. It’s formally a fruit, but treated as a vegetable by most cooks, and comes in scores of forms and sizes: Sicily hosts zucchini up to a metre long, and in any number of colours and stripes. And zucchina? The fruit can take masculine or feminine across Italy— often from village to village—and English takes the American masculine plural. In any case, zucchini is the diminutive of zucca, the word for pumpkin/gourd/squash.

Zucchine/Zucchini
Un altro lontano arrivo dal sud America: lo zucchino è della famiglia delle cucurbitacee e comprende quella che in inglese viene anche chiamata zucca. È formalmente un frutto ma viene considerato una verdura da molti cuochi, e arriva in dozzine di forme e misure. la Sicilia presenta zucchini lunghi fino ad un metro. E la zucchina? Questo frutto può prendere sia il genere maschile che femminile in Italia—spesso cambia da paese a paese, l’inglese prende il plurale maschile americano. In ogni caso, zucchini è il diminutivo di zucca, in inglese, esistono anche i termini pumpkin/gourd/squash per indicare questo ortagio.
