Loquat
I hadn’t seen these since I was a kid, and beautiful seeing tray after tray of this sweet fruit in the markets of Palermo. Originally from China, they have spread to much of the
rest of the world over the last 3000 years. The word loquat is of Chinese origin, nespula from the Ancient Greek. Nespolino is an liqueur made from the seeds of the loquat fruit. It has bitter taste similar to other Italian seed-based bitter liqueurs such as amaretto and nocino.
La nespula
Avia ri quannu era nicu c’on vireva i nespuli, fu tantu bellu quannu potti viriri i cascittina una supra all’avutra cu sti frutti, tantu ruci, nne mircati ri Palermu. All’urigini nascinu ‘nta la luntana Cina tri mila anni passati.
